In founding the ride, Doug wanted to keep his brother’s memory alive. He decided to find a child with medical needs and donate the money from the ride to them. He turned to his friend, who was president of Alamance County Relay for life, who put him in touch with Samantha Harvell; a 13 year old that was diagnosed with cancer. The first ride was a success, raising several thousand dollars. After doing the ride, Doug became good friends with Samantha. As they began to learn more about each other, she confided in him things she wished she would be able to accomplish or do before she passed away. One of her wishes was to ride in a hot air balloon. Doug decided to grant Sam’s wish.   With no intentions of doing another Tricky Ricky Ride, Doug was compelled by Samantha to continue the ride with her help.   The second year of the ride, the funds went to help another child battling leukemia. It was during that ride that Sam asked Doug to grant her another wish; she wanted to ride a motorcycle for the first time. During the event, Doug took Sam for a ride. It was on this ride that Sam confided in him that she didn’t have long to live and that she felt that TRR was something that needed to continue even after her passing. Her wish was that Doug would continue the ride. She told him “it’s not about the money you raise, it was about the moment all those bikes came by my house, all those people who didn’t even know me, but they were all there for me…it gave me hope.” Through their conversation, Doug promised Sam to continue the event.   Shortly after Sam passed away, Doug needed to prepare for a third ride. Doug was having complications finding a child to benefit from the event. Just when he thought he couldn’t continue on with the event, he was inspired by a television commercial for the “Make a Wish” Foundation. The idea of granting wishes to children came to him. He teamed up with Kids Path of Hospice, who had provided care for Samantha during her illness. Together, they created “Sam’s Wish Fund,” will the sole purpose of granting wishes to terminally ill children.   Each year the Tricky Ricky Memorial Ride takes place in June, each year Ricky and Samantha’s memory is kept alive by the people who attend, the countless volunteers, and generous donors.   Ricky Shambley was born December 23, 1954 he passed away August 4, 2006.
